Today, Phil Mickelson won The Players Championship in stellar fashion. More notably, he didn't choke in the clutch, which he has been known to do from time to time (U.S. Open last year). He missed only four fairways and two greens, and had only one bogey when it didn't even matter.
His final round pairing, Sean O'Hair, did choke, however. The 24 year old shot two consecutive balls into the water on the 17th, which increased his deficit from two strokes to five behind Mickelson and virtually put the championship out of reach. This also put O'hair in 3rd place instead of 2nd, which is important because 2nd place receives a purse of around $950,000, while 3rd place around $250,000. So as you can see, O'hair paid dearly for his late-round misfortunes, but maybe this will be a good lesson for the young talent.
